Packaging What Nature Deva Uses and Why

Amber Glass Jars & Bottles

We use these as firstly because Amber naturally offers some natural protection of the product. The darkened glass helps to protect the product from heat and light damage.   Glass is also a first choice because it comes from a sustainable source (sand) and is easy to boil wash to re-use or can be recycled in all states of Australia.

Disadvantages. we don’t make amber glass bottles and jars in Australia, so there is a carbon footprint for importing them and sometimes there is a long wait time. .

Also the 500g body scrubs which contain lots of nourishing oils sometimes leak from these jars when tipped up. I have tried many many solutions including gasket seals, heat seals, shrink sleeves and plumbing tape and still they sometimes leak, so please be aware of this if purchasing the 500g body scrubs online.  All the other sizes 175ml – 30ml jars do not leak.

Our amber glass bottles are used to contain and protect our hydrosols, face oils and serums and essential oils. They can all be reused if returned to Nature Deva, or recycled in your kerbside collection.

RPET Amber Bottles And Jars.

rPET is recycled polyethylene terephthalate. The way rPET is made is by taking postconsumer waste and turning it into a valuable resource. PET bottles/jars are recycled and taken to a sorting facility where they are cleaned and re-granulated into plastic pellets. These pellets are shipped to our bottle manufacturers where they melt them down and blow them into more plastic goods, giving them a second life and, in turn, benefiting the environment by reducing our carbon footprint. Nature Deva’s Shampoos, conditioners, face cleansers and 125ml body creams are all in  rPET packaging, which  is made up of 100% recycled content making it both recyclable and reusable!

RPET is recyclable  and lighter to ship than glass, plus won’t shatter in the shower.  However they are virtually impossible to refill as sterilising them with hot water melts them. They can however be recycled in every state in Australia.

Cellophane Clay Packaging

Cellophane is actually made of cellulose which comes from trees.  If can break down in your compost in 1-4 months.  However it isn’t ideal as some cellophane is treated with chemicals, so we are currently looking into using more corn-starch based bags, but for now they can be composted.

Brown Paper Bags with Windows

Are used to post your orders out. These are 100% biodegradable with the windows being made from corn starch.

Puffed Peanut Packaging is used to protect the glass jars from breakage in the post.  It is 100% reused packaging and 100% compostable. Just add water to it so you don’t dry out your worms.

Brown Corrugated Cardboard is used to wrap your glass jars and bottles.  This is of course biodegradable in your compost, can be used as mulch or put in your recycling.

Brown Cardboard Boxes are 100% compostable made from paper and corn-starch.  They even encourage you to put your veggie scraps in them after use and place in the compost.

Australia Post SatcheBiodegradable Packagingls  During the pandemic we have used some of these as we found it made items less likely to go missing.  However, they are made of plastic but from 80% recycled materials.  They can be recycled at Woolworths or Coles  supermarkets in the soft plastics bin, along with other soft plastics. However, as Australia Post gets back to normal service we will be using these less and just sending orders out in the paper and carboard packaging.

If you have any brilliant environmentally friendly packaging ideas or solutions for shampoos and other liquid bathroom products please let us know. We would love to hear from you.
